Bitesize Chunks of Haematology
I'm a Principal Biomedical Scientist Advanced Practitioner in Morphology with a passion for all things morphology and training. I fell into Haematology quite by accident after taking a temporary MLA position in Blood Transfusion in the early 1990s. From there I quickly realised it was where I was meant to stay.
After moving through the ranks of MLA, Trainee MLSO, multidisciplinary MLSO, and Health & Safety Lead for my department I moved from my local DGH to a large University Teaching Hospital to be a rotating Senior Biomedical Scientist. Shortly afterwards I became the Morphology Senior and the rest they say is history. It was early on in that role that I also became the Haematology Training Officer, a role I still hold today.
My current role as a Principal Biomedical Scientist Advanced Practitioner in Morphology, which I've held for 6 years, is one where I have a foot in the laboratory team and one in the clinical haematology team. It makes for a hugely interesting day.
My passion is in sharing my knowledge and expertise but also in learning from others, too. Morphology is such a subjective discipline that I want to take the fear out of it and make you fall in love with it as I have. One of my biggest joys is in sharing cases with the lab team or when I'm teaching post-graduate students.
I'm hoping that this website will be helpful to anyone starting out in their morphology journey, anyone who is coming back after a career break, and wants a refresher, or just anyone who loves Morphology.
Bitesize Morphology was created during the COVID pandemic as a way to deliver training to our wider Haematology team across our Pathology network. We're now in our 3rd year and other members of our Morphology team have signed up to present in my absence
Future plans?
We even have Biochemistry and POCT team members joining in our sessions so hopefully we'll encourage some Immunology or Micro staff to join in, too.
